A Beginners Guide to Obtaining a Website

The following short guide explains exactly what is needed to put your name on the web, and explains how to obtain these four components.

1. The website address

Purchasing a website address is technically known as purchasing a domain. A domain is of the form example.com (note that www. is not included) and it is needed so that your website visitors can type your website address into their web browsers (such as Internet Explorer) and arrive at your website. There are many other endings available for your domain name such as .co.uk, .org and so on.

2. A Domain Name Server

A domain name server (DNS) is a machine that is always connected to the internet specifically for the purpose of telling peoples' computers where the website is when they have typed in the website address or clicked on a link to it.

3. A web host

A website host provides you with a web server, which is a sophisticated computer that stores the content and design of your website. It then sends this content and design to your visitor's computers when they browse your site.

There are some important differences in web servers which mean that some will be more suited to your requirements than others. If you are not sure which one will be best for you then please contact us and we will be happy to advise you as to the requirements you will need from your web host.

4. The website pages

The content of your site, and the way it looks, is the only part that is correctly known as your website. This is where Avioso comes in; we can create a website for you that will really stand out from the crowd. For more information please take a look at our standard website design package.

How to obtain these components

Most web hosts offer a combination of the first three things necessary for putting your name on the web; a domain, a domain name server and a web server. Choosing a web host can however be very difficult. Avioso Designs therefore suggests looking at reviews such as those found on Host Search.
